WESTMINSTER, Orange County — October 23, 2026. Westminster will hold municipal elections on November 3, 2026 for mayor and council seats in Districts 1 and 4. Voters should not assume every resident can vote for every council candidate: the mayor is elected citywide, while council seats are elected by district. The official Westminster Election and Voter Services page provides the operative district map and instructions.

Which offices are being filled?

Westminster has a four-member City Council and a separately elected mayor. Each position serves a four-year term, with terms staggered between election cycles. The 2026 election covers one citywide mayor seat and council Districts 1 and 4. Residents in Districts 2 and 3 should still review their state, county and federal contests but do not automatically have a Westminster council race on their 2026 ballot.

Why does the district map matter?

The city’s council adopted district elections in December 2019 and revised the lines after the 2020 census in March 2022. A Westminster postal address does not tell a resident their council district; use the city’s interactive map and your address to find the correct district before comparing candidates. Verify the final ballot candidate list with election officials, not only with campaign posters.

What happened to the filing deadlines?

Westminster opened the 2026 nomination period on July 13, with an initially announced August 7 deadline. The city’s official July announcement explains that city candidates must meet residence, registration and other eligibility requirements. As those dates have now passed, readers should consult the certified candidate list and county sample ballot rather than attempt to use old candidate filing instructions.

Where can residents vote?

The Orange County Registrar of Voters publishes official voting locations, ballot drop boxes, tracking instructions and late-registration options when applicable. California’s general election is November 3. Use the latest county resources because early voting locations and hours can change. For municipal election questions, Westminster lists the City Clerk at 714-548-3237.

Why does local government matter?

The city’s mayor and council vote on budgets, municipal services, planning policy and appointments. Readers evaluating a candidate’s claims should examine official agendas, campaign-finance disclosures and public records, and distinguish the council’s policy choices from services run by Orange County and other agencies. Our newspaper does not endorse candidates in this service guide.
